Did you know that approximately 13,000 children are diagnosed with cancer in the US each year? The good news is that even though the number of cancer cases has increased, mortality rates have declined. This is largely attributed to improved treatments from better research. However, only 4% of US federal funding for cancer research goes to children.
The statistics are unsettling. In the last 20 years, the
FDA has approved only one new drug specifically developed for pediatric cancer. Too add to that, half the drugs used for pediatric cancer treatment are over 25 years old. Moreover, children in the US suffer from more than 6,000 rare diseases and, of these 6,000 diseases, only 200 have drug treatments.
Even more disturbing is the awareness that once a child survives cancer, he has a 75% chance of developing a long-term chronic illness. Additionally, childhood cancer survivors are at risk to develop cancer later in life.
These facts are why
Marc’s sponsors Kick-It for Cancer.
Kick-It is a national fundraising program that focuses solely on raising money for children’s cancer research. We at Marc’s are proud to be a part of this inspiring opportunity to help raise money for children’s research.
On Saturday, June 13th and Sunday, June 14th, Marc’s will host a
Kick-It Kickball Tournament to help raise money for children’s cancer research. We will have 3 regional tournaments (west side, east side and south side) that lead up to the championship game on Sunday.
