Early in the COVID-19 pandemic, the National Library of Medicine (NLM) collaborated with publishers and scholarly societies to expand access to coronavirus-related journal articles in PubMed Central (PMC), a digital archive of peer-reviewed biomedical and life sciences literature. Through this collaboration, more than 50 publishers made more than 350,000 coronavirus-related articles accessible under various article-level license terms through the PMC COVID-19 Collection (previously the PMC COVID-19 Public Health Emergency Initiative). NLM, through its GenBank® sequence database, is providing the biomedical community free and easy access to genome sequences from the novel coronavirus associated with the recent outbreak of pneumonia in Wuhan, China. The Associate Fellowship Program is a one-year postgraduate training program with an optional second year. This competitive program provides associates with a broad foundation in health sciences information services and prepares librarians for future leadership roles in health sciences libraries and health services research. This group of Associate Fellows recently ended the first year of their fellowship. Three will continue for second year fellowships at health sciences libraries in the United States: at Lane Medical Library, Stanford University; Strauss Health Sciences Library, University of Colorado, and at the Taubman Health Sciences Library, University of Michigan. Two of the Associate Fellows will take positions at libraries in the Washington DC area: one at the National Agricultural Library and one at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center.

It is with great sadness that we share the news of the passing of Donald A.B. Lindberg, M.D., who served as the director of the National Library of Medicine (NLM) for more than 30 years. He was one of the longest-serving leaders at NIH and continued his service as director emeritus of NLM after his retirement in March 2015. Because of his pioneering work in applying computer technology to biomedical research and health information, he is considered by many to be the country’s senior statesman for computers and medicine. Don died on August 16 following a fall; he was 86.

The National Library of Medicine (NLM) is pleased to announce the future plans of its 2017-2018 class of Associate Fellows. The Associate Fellowship Program is a one-year postgraduate training program with an optional second year. This competitive program provides associates with a broad foundation in health sciences information services and prepares librarians for future leadership roles in health sciences libraries and health services research. This group of Associate Fellows recently ended the first year of their fellowship. All three will continue for a second year of the Associate Fellowship Program in libraries in Chicago and Philadelphia.

The Association of Academic Health Sciences Libraries and the National Library of Medicine (https://www.nlm.nih.gov) are pleased to announce the members of the 2018-2019 class of the NLM/AAHSL Leadership Fellows Program. The jointly sponsored program matches fellows and mentors in a one year leadership development program. Since the program began in 2002, 54 percent of fellow graduates have assumed director positions.

NLM Director Patricia Flatley Brennan, RN, PhD, has announced the appointment of Dina Paltoo, PhD, MPH, as NLM Assistant Director for Policy Development. In this role, she leads NLM’s policy and legislative activities which promote access to scientific data and information, as well as health information technology. Dr. Paltoo had performed the duties in an interim capacity since April 2018 while on detail from the NIH Office of Science Policy (OSP), Office of the Director, National Institutes of Health (NIH). Her official appointment took effect July 9, 2018.

The National Library of Medicine (1) assists the advancement of medical and related sciences through the collection, dissemination, and exchange of information important to the progress of medicine and health; (2) serves as a national information resource for medical education, research, and service activities of Federal and private agencies, organizations, and institutions; (3) serves as a national information resource for the public, patients, and families by providing electronic access to reliable health information issued by the National Institutes of Health and other trusted sources; (4) publishes in print and electronically guides to health sciences information in the form of catalogs, bibliographies, indexes, and online databases; (5) provides support for medical library development and for training of biomedical librarians and other health information specialists; (6) conducts and supports research in methods for recording, storing, retrieving, preserving, and communicating health information; (7) creates information resources and access tools for molecular biology, biotechnology, toxicology, environmental health, and health services research; and (8) provides technical consultation services and research assistance.

The National Library of Medicine released a new design for the Disaster Information Management Research Center website and the Disaster Lit® database. The new design improves access to key resources on natural and man-made disasters, as well as public health emergencies such as emerging infectious diseases.

On June 1, 2018, the National Library of Medicine (NLM) released a new design for its Main homepage featuring simplified navigation, improved access to news and highlights about NLM’s work and training opportunities, and more direct access to NLM’s most popular resources.
